Frequently Asked Questions

You have questions? We have answers!

Who is Duuo?

Duuo was created by Co-operators, a proudly Canadian insurance company founded in 1945 by a small group of farmers and social pioneers who felt traditional insurance didn’t meet their unique needs. So they invented a different kind of company designed especially for them. Duuo is the 21st century version of this mindset. We created a new way to meet the ever-changing insurance needs of Canadians living and working in a highly innovative and fast-paced digital economy.

Why do I need homeshare insurance?

Homeowners insurance policies have many restrictions and conditions regarding use of your home for a business. The homeshare (or short-term rental) of your residence is generally not covered by homeowners policies. In most cases, a commercial insurance policy is required, but depending on how often you rent to guests, those can be prohibitively expensive. Enter Duuo, homeshare insurance coverage for the time you’re renting your home, not a minute or penny more.

Who needs this policy?

Everyone who rents their home on a homeshare platform needs insurance. Duuo offers complete coverage options for homeshare hosts.

Doesn't the homeshare site I am using cover me?

Unfortunately, a host protection program is not the same as having an insurance policy in your name. We would encourage you to consider:

  • Whether there exist important differences in terms, conditions and limits
  • What rights are you entitled under the protection program compared to an insurance policy
  • To whom do you submit your claim when an unfortunate event arises
How do I purchase insurance policies for my clients if I'm a Homeshare property manager?

We LOVE working with property managers, because like us, you have a host’s best interests at heart! Simply register separately in the name of the property owner (as they have the insurable interest for the premises being insured). Each email address used must also be unique to each client although they may be addressed to the property manager.

Please remember that you must have permission from the owner of the Homeshare premises to purchase this insurance policy on their behalf.

We welcome any feedback on how we can meet your particular needs through future enhancement to our site. If you have any suggestions to help us meet those needs, just contact us at

How can I register my property as being owned by a company instead of a person?

We’ll be improving this experience in the very near future, but for now please just split the company name into two parts and enter them into the “First Name” and “Last Name” fields.

For example, First Name: “Heavenly”, Last Name: “Lofts Inc.”

How much coverage do I get with Duuo?
  • Property insurance is covered to the full replacement cost of the home, additional structures and all contents.
  • Commercial liability for a limit of $2,000,000
  • The policy includes coverage for things like infestation, loss of income, breakage of valuables, damage to electronics, theft, and more. More details are available in our Homeshare page.
Why is the dwelling limit on the quote for my insurance policy less than the market value of my home?

The market or resale value of your home is typically the price that someone is willing to pay to purchase your home and the land on which your home has been built. The dwelling limit of your insurance policy quote is based on what it may currently cost to replace or rebuild your home, and excludes the value of the land on which it has been built.

Will I have proof of coverage?

Yes, indeed! Pull up your coverage through the web application. We also send you an email with your policy details.

How much is it?

A Duuo homeshare policy averages only $8 / night. Our rates are calculated based on the estimated replacement cost of your home (not the market value of your home).

What homesharing platforms do you provide coverage for? What if I don't see my platform?

There are a growing number of short-term rental platforms used by hosts for homesharing. Right now Duuo provides homeshare insurance coverage to customers renting through a sharing network company.

The following is a list of our currently approved Homesharing platforms: Airbnb, CanadaStays, VRBO, HomeAway, FlipKey, Vacation Home Rentals,, TripAdvisor Rentals, and Wanderful.

If you are using a platform/provider not included above please contact our Customer Support Team at and provide the name and web address of the platform so we can review for possible inclusion on this list.

When will Homeshare coverage be available in my province?

Our plans to cross the country are well underway, and now we’re in Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Prince Edward Island and Saskatchewan! Our last stop will take us to Quebec, the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut.

How far in advance do I have to purchase a policy for a stay?

You can purchase a policy up to midnight of the guest’s first arrival date all the way up to 1 year in advance.

What if I purchase a policy for a stay and then need to cancel it because the stay was cancelled? Do I get a refund?

Policies may be deleted/cancelled up to midnight of the scheduled policy start date (the guest’s arrival date). Once cancelled, the full policy premium is immediately refunded to the credit card you used to purchase the policy. Note that a policy cannot be cancelled for refund after the start date.

How to cancel -> You can cancel your policy in one of two ways:

  1. From the Stays Dashboard, select DELETE on the hamburger menu on the right.
  2. From the Stays Dashboard, select VIEW STAY on the hamburger menu , and then the ‘Delete stay / policy’ button.
How do I file a claim?

Easy! Enter your claim right in the homeshare dashboard. Provide a few details of what happened and it’s underway.

Do you have any other products?

Not yet, but stay tuned for more announcements.

What's the catch?

There isn’t one. You are fully and properly covered by a commercial insurance policy for the time you are acting as a business, period! Of course, you only pay for it on a per-use basis, just like your customers pay for your services, which makes so much more sense.
