Farmers’ Markets Ontario is partnered with Duuo by Co-operators to create insurance packages tailored to the needs of today’s vendors and market managers. With a variety of packages, from single-day to 150-day coverage, our partnership makes it easier than ever to ensure that market vendors are covered at multiple markets and events.
Founded in 1991, Farmers’ Markets Ontario (FMO) is a nonprofit organization that supports farmers’ markets across Ontario.
With a membership of over 180, the organization encompasses a wide range of sizes, from small to very large, and represents both rural and urban communities. It is all driven by community involvement and producer-based initiatives.
Fueled by the demand for local food and products, farmers’ markets act as key retail hubs that connect farmers to shoppers through direct sales. Over the past 10 years, farmers’ market sales in Ontario are estimated to have increased 10 – 12 percent annually to about $800 million, with an economic impact of over $2.5 billion.
FMO’s mandate is to provide services to member markets, including management, government relations, marketing, professional development, and liability insurance through Duuo by Co-operators—while promoting farmers, farmers’ markets and the benefits of shopping local to Ontario consumers.
Many new “farmers’ markets” have shifted to a stronger focus on handmade Arts & Crafts, artisanal foods, craft beer & wine, and more. While the diversity in product offerings helps keep local markets popular and well attended, Farmers’ Markets Ontario have kept their mandates the same.
“It’s important that we keep farming profitable in Canada—and farmers’ markets are incredibly vital to keeping that industry alive. To become a member of Farmers’ Markets Ontario, you have to have farmers at your markets! At least 51% of the food produced, bought, and sold in your market must come from an Ontario farm.”
Catherine Clark, Executive Director at FMO.
