What’s covered?

While car insurance plans vary by province, there are coverages you must have to drive a vehicle. To maximize your protection, we also offer optional coverages you can choose from.

Mandatory coverages

Liability

If you are involved in a collision and are held legally liable for other people’s injuries, or for damage to another person’s vehicle or property, your insurance company will pay up to the total amount listed on your policy.

Accident Benefits

This covers medical expenses not covered by a provincial health plan, plus loss of income due to a collision.

In some provinces, you may be entitled to additional benefits if you are someone’s caregiver.

Uninsured Automobile

This coverage protects you and your family if you are injured or killed by a hit-and-run driver or an uninsured motorist. It also covers damage to your vehicle caused by an uninsured driver.

Available in select provinces.

Direct Compensation Property Damage

This covers the cost of loss or damage to your car in a collision for which you’re not entirely responsible.

Available in select provinces.

Top up your coverages

Collision

This covers the cost of repairs or the actual cash value of your vehicle in the event of a collision.

Subject to your deductible.

Waiver of depreciation

This coverage protects against the loss of value or depreciation of a new vehicle if your vehicle is beyond repair and must be replaced because of an accident.

This coverage is available up to the first five years of a vehicle lease or ownership.

Comprehensive

This covers losses to your vehicle other than those covered by Collision. Some examples include vandalism, falling or flying objects, and theft.*

*Comprehensive and Specified Perils do not insure your car against theft if a member of your household steals your car, or if an employee whose job involves using or maintaining the car steals your vehicle.

Physical Damage Extension

This coverage combines two popular coverages: loss of use and coverage on rental vehicles.

Got questions? We have answers!

Why do provincial governments regulate auto insurance?

Depending on the province, regulators oversee how insurance companies assess risk, determine price, and handle claims. They also actively determine which factors insurers can and can’t use when setting auto insurance rates.

What factors impact my premiums?

Many factors can impact your premium, such as your driving experience, driving and claims records (accidents, tickets, etc.), the type of car you drive, where you drive, how much you drive, the discounts you qualify for, the amount of coverage you purchase and your deductible.

What is no-fault insurance?

Also called Direct Compensation Property Damage (DCPD), this insurance covers the cost of loss or damage to your car in a collision for which you were not entirely responsible. To qualify, the other driver must be identified, insured and found to be at least partially at fault.

DCPD is only available in select provinces. Review your car insurance policy for specific details, restrictions and exclusions.

Does my insurance policy cover someone else who drives my car?

Yes, you can loan your vehicle to family and friends with valid driver’s licenses. However, if they are involved in a claim on the vehicle, your policy or premium will be impacted.

How does my insurance company determine whether I’m at fault in a collision?

After investigating the collision, insurance companies assign fault levels to drivers. If multiple drivers are partially at fault, each gets a degree of responsibility, and multiple insurers could be involved in the settlement. A detailed explanation of the findings will be provided.

How does my insurance company decide whether to repair my car or declare it a total loss?

Your car is considered a total loss if it costs more to repair than it is worth. Depending on your coverage, your insurer might offer a settlement based on the car’s cash value.

Why or when am I considered high-risk?

Some instances where you’d be placed in a higher risk category include serious convictions, at-fault collisions, impaired driving, or driving without insurance, and minor convictions such as speeding. Liability insurance is mandatory to drive a vehicle on the road, and risk selection can vary by province.

I lease my vehicle. What kind of insurance do I need?

In addition to the mandatory provincial coverage and liability insurance, you will also need physical damage coverage, such as Collision and Comprehensive insurance.

Will my driving experience outside of Canada count?

That depends on the country and licence type. Contact us to learn more.
